Apart from aggregator companies, the government is also considering issuing a new order for petrol pumps. The government will ask dealers and petrol pumps not to give fuel to any vehicle that does not have a Pollution Under Control Check Certificate (PUC).
In Delhi city, 40 percent of the air pollution comes from vehicles. An official told PTI, “The government is going to take two big steps to check the pollution caused by vehicles. We will talk to all aggregators including Zomato about this. We will issue instructions to dealers and petrol pumps that valid No fuel should be given to the vehicle without the Pollution Under Control Check Certificate. Directions in this regard can be issued this week under the Environment (Protection) Act.
When asked whether there would be a deadline for aggregators to switch to EVs, a senior official said, “It will be implemented phase by phase. A draft of the guidelines will be published soon.”
Along with improving the electric charging infrastructure, the transport department is also looking to initiate discussions on battery swapping infrastructure.
“Indraprastha Gas Limited has decided to install 50 battery swapping stations at CNG pumps in Delhi. Such electric vehicles in which batteries can be swapped are very cheap. The biggest challenge is two-wheelers,” the official said. We have started talks with vehicle aggregators on how we can convert them into electric two wheelers.
The Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy was introduced in 2020 with the objective of increasing the share of EVs in total vehicle sales by 25 percent by 2024. Worldwide, Flipkart aims to have fully electric vehicles in its delivery fleet by 2030 and FedEx by 2040. DHL has set a target of using electric vehicles up to 60 percent of its fleet.
In October, the Delhi government had launched a massive campaign to verify PUC certificates, in which 500 teams were set up at petrol pumps.
