Apple Iphone
Apple announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last year that it was now going to allow users to use Face ID and Touch ID instead of passwords in websites on Safari. Now the company is taking it a step further where Passwordless Sign Up has been introduced.
Apple announced this feature in a developer session called ‘Proceed with Passwords’. These Passkeys will allow you to sign up for the services without any password.
How Passkeys will work
When you visit the Passkeys supported website, you’ll enter the username of your choice when registering, and then use Face ID or Touch ID to sign in instead of using a password. Your Face ID and Touch ID will be used to authenticate you and sign in.
Passkey will be here on iPhone, iPad and Max by the end of this year. At the same time you can also turn it off by default. The new Passkey tech is part of the iCloud Keychain and is part of the FIDO (Fast Identity Online Alliance) WebAuthn protocol.
Advantage of Passkey
Passkey is a very secure method for authentication and will be very effective in protecting you from phishing attacks. However, this tech will not currently work on devices that are not part of the Apple ecosystem. With Android devices, you’ll still need to use a password.
However, this is not a bad news as Google and Microsoft already have support for passwordless login. Microsoft said in March that it had 200 million accounts that already use the login method and did not include passwords.
