The number of EV registrations increased exponentially in 2021. According to the report, electric two-wheeler and passenger type electric three-wheeler contributed the most. Of all the electric vehicles registered in November, 92% were electric two-wheelers only and passenger electric three-wheelers. Cargo type electric three wheelers stood at 3.9 percent and e-cars stood at 3.7%.
Talking about the state-wise figures, Uttar Pradesh topped it. Uttar Pradesh alone accounted for 20% of the number of EVs registered in the country in November. Maharashtra is at number two where 11% of electric vehicles were registered. Karnataka was at the third place with 9% EV registration. Karnataka is followed by 9% in Rajasthan and 9% in Delhi as well.
Tata Motors and MG Motors led the way in sales of electric cars. Both the companies acquired 98% share of the e-car sale. Out of this, Tata Motors held 89% of the stock, which was 80% in the previous month. In order to increase the sales of EVs in India, the central government launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme in 2015. In 2019, the second phase (FAME-II) of the same scheme was launched for which a budget of Rs 10 thousand crore was kept.
In addition to the scheme, the government reduced the GST on EVs from 12% to 5%. To further the development of charging stations, the government has also reduced the GST on charging infrastructure. Under the FAME-II scheme, the government has increased the subsidy benefit on electric two-wheelers from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. Due to which now customers have to pay less price while buying EV. With the continuous efforts of the government and the increasing awareness for the environment among citizens, the number of EVs can be seen to increase manifold in the coming time.
