Vasai: On the one hand, there is a severe water shortage in the city, while on the other hand lakhs of liters of water have been misused. According to the preliminary survey of Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, there are thousands of illegal tap connections in the city. Due to which huge amount of water is being misused every day in the city. The Municipal Corporation had decided to check illegal tap connections and cut them, on which action has been started.
Water scarcity has arisen in Vasai-Virar city due to increasing population, shortage of water and lack of distribution system. The entire dependence of the Municipal Corporation is now on the water from Surya Jal Project through MMRDA, but for this it will have to wait till the end of the year. The city is facing water crisis since March and it will be a big challenge for the next two-and-a-half months. There are a large number of illegal tap connections inside the city, which have been seen to be misuse of water.

3 crore liters of water is wasted every day
According to the information given by the Municipal Corporation, there are more than 3 thousand illegal tap connections in the city. These illegal tap connections are connected directly to the main pipeline. Most of this water is wasted due to leakage. Due to incorrect plumbing, users get less water, while there is more wastage. In areas where there are illegal tap connections, other citizens of those areas get water under low pressure and the entire distribution system gets crippled. According to the Municipal Corporation, 30 million liters of water is wasted every day due to illegal tap connections.
Illegal tap connections will be cut
An official of the Municipal Water Distribution Department said that to overcome the problem of water scarcity, the Municipal Corporation has decided to cut off the illegally connected tap connections. A few months ago, the Municipal Corporation had cut 119 illegal tap connections in the city. Due to this, 90 lakh liters of water was saved. Due to which the survey work is started to cut off all the illegal tap connections added in the city. At present, it is estimated that there are more than 3,000 illegal tap connections in the city. As the information is being received, the employees of the department are doing the work of cutting it.
Water shortage of 4.30 crore liters per day
A total of 23 crore liters of water is being distributed to Vasai-Virar city including 23 crore liters from both the phases of Surya Prakalp, 1 from Pelhar dam and 2 crore liters from that village dam. The city needs 326 million liters of water, while it is getting only 22 crore liters. In that too the water seepage rate is more than 15%. Due to which the citizens are getting only 19 crore liters of water directly. Citizens are facing water shortage due to shortage of 4.3 crore liters of water per day.

An official of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation’s water distribution department says that a large amount of water is being wasted in the city due to illegally connected tap connections. More than 3 thousand tap connections are connected illegally in the city, we have decided to check and cut them, on which work is in progress. This will save more than 3 crore liters of water per day, which can bring relief to the citizens.
