Usually the magnetic fields of planets are born inside them. For example- Earth’s magnetic field originates in its outer core, it extends for many kilometers in space. Actually it acts like a shield against the radiation coming from the universe.
On the other hand the magnetic field on Mars exists only in patches. It is formed by the interaction of the solar wind with the Martian atmosphere. Due to the lack of magnetic field on the entire planet, there is a lot of radiation on Mars.
Researchers at the Australian National University hope their discovery may shed light on why Mars no longer has a magnetic field. They have published their findings in the journal Nature Communications.
Study co-author Hrvoje Takali said earthquakes on Mars can help us understand whether convection is taking place in the planet’s interior. Convection is a way of moving heat from one place to another. Hrvoje Takali says that if this is happening, then there will also be a mechanism, which is blocking its magnetic field.
Scientists previously thought that marsquakes could be caused by tectonic forces, but these findings suggest that magma is still active in the Martian mantle. The fact is, all the earthquakes on Mars have been found in the same region, said Hrvoje Takali. This suggests that the planet is more active from the point of view of earthquakes than was thought.
