What is BRO and what are its functions?
The Border Road Organization is a road construction force in the country that supports the Indian military forces. It develops and maintains road networks in the country’s border areas and neighboring countries. It was created in the year 1960 to protect the country’s borders and develop infrastructure in the remote areas of the north and north-eastern states. According to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, BRO has played a big role in promoting tourism. After the construction of the Atal Tunnel, the number of tourists in that area increased six times. While launching the portal today, Raksha Mantri mentioned that BRO Cafes have been set up at 75 places in far flung areas which will provide basic facilities to the travelers, which will boost tourism in these areas. In the last six decades, the BRO has constructed more than 60,000 km of roads, 850 major bridges, 19 airstrips and four tunnels.
