The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered its second week. Meanwhile, more than 600 hundred Indian students are stranded in the Ukrainian city of Sumi. The city’s electricity supply has been cut after a bomb attack on Thursday, making the situation very difficult for the residents of the city.
In a Hindustan Times report, Malvika Manoj, a student of Kerala studying medicine at Sumi State University, said that due to lack of electricity supply and enough water, they are forced to quench their thirst by melting ice. He told that the students had collected water but when it was over, they took ice from outside and melted it.
Russia on Thursday opened heavy shelling in the Sumy region of Ukraine, destroying a thermal power plant there and disrupting the city’s electricity supply.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday that it is deeply concerned for the Indian students trapped in Sumi and the governments of Russia and Ukraine are being pressured to evacuate them.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, “We are deeply concerned about the Indian students in Sumy, Ukraine. Strong pressure on the Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire to create a safe corridor for our students.” being cast.”

He further said, “We have asked all Indian students in Ukraine to be alert and safe. All students should stay in a safe place and do not take unnecessary risks. The Ministry of External Affairs and our Embassy are in constant touch with the students.”
Malvika said that continuous sirens and air strikes could be heard in the city and students were trapped in bunkers. He said that there is no electricity in the treatment. “I am not using the phone much as the battery will run out. Communication can break at any time,” she said.
He said that not a single student has been expelled from Sumy State University so far. Malvika said that she came to know that the Indian government was trying to evacuate the students through the Russian border. However, he said that the Russian border is 65 kilometers away from him and in this situation of war he would need to get approval from the Ukrainian authorities to go to the Russian border.
“The Indian embassy in Ukraine and the Ukrainian government still haven’t given permission or sanction to travel. Without approval, if students travel and if anything happens, no one will take responsibility,” Malvika reported in the report.
The Indian Embassy in Ukraine has also said that it is making every effort to evacuate Indian nationals in Sumi safely and securely. “The identification of evacuation and exit routes has been discussed with all interlocutors including the Red Cross. The control room will remain operational until all our citizens are evacuated. Stay safe, stay strong,” the embassy said.
