Russia has informed the United Nations Security Council that Russian buses will be crossing points for the evacuation of Indian students and other foreign nationals in the eastern Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Sumy. The 15-Nation Council held an emergency session on Friday. During the meeting, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, said that the Russian military is doing everything to peacefully evacuate foreign nationals trapped in Ukraine.
He alleged that Ukrainians “forcefully” detained more than 3,700 Indian nationals in Kharkiv and Sumy cities in eastern Ukraine.
Nebenzia told the council: “The terrorists are not allowing civilians to leave the city. This affects not only Ukrainians but also foreigners. The number of foreign nationals who are being forcibly detained by Ukrainians is staggering. In Kharkiv – 3,189 citizens of India, 2,700 citizens of Vietnam, 202 citizens of China have been detained. In Sumi – 576 citizens of India, 101 citizens of Ghana, 121 citizens of China have been detained.”

He further said “130 comfortable buses in Belgorod region of Russia ready to go to Kharkiv and Sumy from 6.00 am today to evacuate Indian students and other foreign nationals at crossing points ‘Nekhoteevka’ and ‘Suja’ (‘Nekhoteevka’). ‘ and ‘Sudja’) are waiting (and standing ready).”
The Russian envoy said their posts were equipped to provide temporary accommodation, rest places and hot meals, Mint reported. There are also mobile medical stations with stock of medicines.

While in New Delhi, reacting to reports of Indian students being held hostage in Ukraine, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India should not take any hostage in relation to Indian students. No status report has been received.
