In a statement to TOI, a senior Maruti Suzuki executive has confirmed that both Maruti and Toyota are likely to manufacture electric cars at Suzuki Motor’s Gujarat plant. Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki’s parent company Suzuki has been selected to benefit under the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, allowing the company to manufacture electric cars for the needs of both Maruti and Toyota.
On the prospects of Toyota cars being made at the Gujarat plant, Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, Maruti told TOI, “We have to [टोयोटा] Will have to discuss with you.” He added, “This part is still under discussion by Suzuki Japan. We haven’t got any final result. But we have to watch carefully. ,
Ayukawa further told the publication that Toyota Japan has announced an aggressive global plan for electric models, but he is not clear whether any of those plans will make their way to Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.
Toyota and Suzuki are already working in India with a business alliance as well as product-development and model-sharing. Toyota India has rebadged several ICE models of Maruti Suzuki, including the Baleno-Glanza and Vitara Brezza-Urban Cruiser. Also, Toyota may soon launch the Ciaz in India with the Belta badge.
A recent report claimed that Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will reportedly launch a midsize SUV as their first electric car in India. It was told that the Maruti Suzuki version will adopt a new design style, which will be a bit futuristic. This version is reportedly codenamed YY8. On the other hand, the Toyota variant will be launched with both two-wheel and all-wheel drive options, which will be the Toyota badge version of the YY8, but with different exterior dimensions. It is speculated that the styling and design will be on the lines of the BZ4X EV.
