Mumbai: The country’s longest Mumbai Trans Harbor Link Bridge being built in the sea has started taking shape. The second pair of orthotropic steel decks (OSDs) were launched on the bridge. Orthotropic steel deck span is being used for the first time for any bridge construction in India.
The length of this pair of spans is about 120 meters. Each of these weighs about 1300 metric tons. Earlier in January, the first OSD span of 70 meters was launched.
Will be 70 OSD span
There will be 70 OSD spans on MTHL like this. The orthotropic steel deck is a superstructure, which carries the load of vehicles more efficiently between the three panes. Ships crossing the channel adjacent to MTHL will have ease to pass under the bridge. At least 25 per cent (4.5 km) of MTHL’s total length at sea will have these spans made of steel. These steel pan OSDs are being manufactured in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and Myanmar.
