Mumbai: Condoling the death of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar Died, noted lyricist Gulzar said that she is a miracle which cannot be put into words. Expressing grief over the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, as if the lyricist’s vocabulary had become empty.
Gulzar and Lata didi first worked together in the song ‘Mora Gora Rang Leile’ from the 1963 film ‘Bandini’ and the two last worked together in 2021 ‘Ok Nahi Lagta’. The song was recorded for a film 26 years ago, but was never released.
In an interview with PTI/Bhasha, the veteran lyricist said, “Lataji is a charisma in itself and this charisma doesn’t always happen and today this charisma has become complete. She left. She was a wonderful singer, whose voice had a miracle. It’s hard to find adjectives for them. No matter how much we talk about them, it will be less. They cannot be put into words.”

Gulzar and Lata have worked in several films including ‘Khamoshi’, ‘Kinara’, ‘Lekin’, ‘Rudali’, ‘Masoom’, ‘Libas’, ‘Dil Se…’, ‘Satya’, ‘Hu Tu Tu’ and ‘Maachis’. I worked together. The song ‘Naam Gum Jayega’ from Gulzar’s directorial ‘Kinara’ is clearly expressing Mangeshkar’s brahmin today. Gulzar said the song is absolutely ‘appropriate’ while talking about him.
He recalled, “We wrote a song for a film. I remember, I told her that when you give an autograph, you can use it (lines of the song). ‘My voice is my identity, if you remember. “I didn’t think it would happen (it would become his identity), but it became his identity and that’s how he got to know him,” he said.
Gulzar says that he remembers very well the day the song was recorded and the conversation he had with Lata. Significantly, Lata Mangeshkar died on Sunday morning at Breach Candy Hospital. The 92-year-old singer was admitted to the hospital on January 8 after being diagnosed with COVID. (agency)
