Bharat Bhatia, President, ITU APT Foundation of India, said in a statement that 5G services in India do not pose a threat to aircraft. We are completely safe, as we are allocating only 3300-3670 MHz frequency. This altimeter is more than 500 MHz over the spectrum. The C band frequencies that are being auctioned for 5G in India are completely safe and do not pose any threat to the altimeter.
The ITU-APT Foundation of India is affiliated with the UN body International Telecommunications Union. It deals with issues related to spectrum.
Significantly, aircraft around the world use the frequency band 4200-4400 MHz for radio altimeters. In the US, 5G service is being deployed in the 3700-3,980 frequency band, which is close to the altimeter’s frequency band.
Bharat Bhatia said that because of the frequency bands in the US that can threaten the altimeter, the Indian government is not even considering those frequency bands for 5G services in the country.
The spectrum band allocation in India is currently being discussed. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation letter to decide the price and rules for spectrum allocation. The spectrum will be allotted through auction after the government reviews the recommendations of TRAI. The government is also in no hurry to implement 5G services in the country. The allotment of spectrum is ready only after taking into consideration the safety measures and all the aspects.
