New Delhi46 Prisoners and 43 employees have been found infected with Corona virus in three jails of Delhi. Officials gave this information on Monday. A senior prison official said, “All the infected prisoners and personnel are in isolation and their health is improving.”
According to the data shared by the jail authorities, out of the 46 inmates found infected till Sunday, 29 are from Tihar and 17 from Mandoli Jail. Of the 43 employees found infected, 25 are from Tihar, 12 from Rohini Jail and six from Mandoli Jail. Prison dispensaries have been converted into ‘COVID care centres’ to contain the spread of infection in Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini jail premises, officials said.

An oxygen plant set up in Tihar will also start functioning soon. Several ‘medical isolation cells’ have been set up for prisoners who have mild symptoms of infection. At the same time, for the patients who do not have any symptoms of infection, separate ‘isolation rooms’ have been made in the prison premises itself. Officials said that a 120-bed COVID Care Center has been set up in Tihar and 48-bedded in Mandoli.
The jail administration told that they have formed four committees to look after the prisoners and staff. Officials said that employees and prisoners are maintaining social distance as far as possible. Prisoners are not allowed to come out of their wards most of the time and awareness campaigns are being conducted regularly to make them aware about the rules related to COVID-19. According to the data, till January 7, there were a total of 18,528 prisoners in three jails in Delhi. Of these, 12,669 were in Tihar, 4,018 in Mandoli and 1,841 in Rohini.
