As reported by Zycrypto, the director of Iran Grid Management, Mustafa Razani Mashadi, has announced a moratorium on bitcoin mining. Its aim is to save electricity up to 209 MW. The ban will continue till March 6. Iran’s authorities will control illegal bitcoin mining centers that use more than 600 MW of electricity. This is not the first time that Iran’s authorities have blamed bitcoin mining as a major cause of pressure on its power grid. In May last year, Iran imposed a four-month ban on bitcoin mining as it caused a shortage of electricity in many parts of the country.
According to Cambridge researchers, bitcoin mining consumes about 121.36 terawatt hours (TWh) of energy a year. There is a protest in some countries against the excessive consumption of electricity in crypto mining. Recently, crypto miners were blamed for the lack of electricity in Russia’s Irkutsk region. Electricity consumption increased by 108 percent last year as more people in the region became involved in crypto mining.
For this reason, bitcoin mining has been banned in some countries like China. In Europe, the government of Kosovo has also banned cryptocurrency mining in the country. This decision has been taken to reduce power consumption. Kosovo is facing the worst shortage of electricity in the last decade due to the decrease in electricity generation. In some states of America, there is also opposition to the excessive consumption of electricity in bitcoin mining.
