New Delhi. Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a tour of Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. He will inaugurate the ‘Saryu Canal National Project’ here around 1 pm. Explain that this canal will provide assured water for irrigation of more than 14 lakh hectares of land and will also benefit about 29 lakh farmers of the area.

Prepared at a cost of Rs 9800 crore
In this regard, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that this project has been made at a total cost of more than Rs 9,800 crore. Out of which a provision of more than Rs 4,600 crore was made in the last four years. The PMO said that the work on the project started in 1978, but sometimes due to lack of proper coordination and proper monitoring between the concerned departments, the budget allocation and sometimes the project got stuck and it could not get off the ground for four decades. The PMO further explained that the Prime Minister’s vision for farmer welfare and empowerment and his commitment to give priority to long pending projects of national importance led to his focus on the project.
Five rivers linked
It is worth noting that under this project five rivers – Ghaghra, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga and Rohini have now been interlinked to ensure proper utilization of the water resources of the region.
More than 6200 villages and about 29 lakh farmers will benefit
Yes, this project will provide assured water to irrigate more than 14 lakh hectares of land and will benefit about 29 lakh farmers of more than 6200 villages. Due to this, now nine districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur and Maharajganj will be benefitted. At the same time, the farmers of the region, who were the worst sufferers due to inordinate delays in the project, will now benefit immensely from the improved irrigation potential and will also be able to grow crops on a large scale and maximize the agricultural potential of the region.
