This isn’t the first time Google has done something like this. A new report suggests that Google has removed several stalkerware ads from the Play Store that promote spying on life partners. These stalkerware ads promote apps that allow users to spy on their life partner or lover. This is against the policy and guidelines of play store.
Stalkerware apps take suspicious access to messages, call logs, location and other personal information, usually under a fake app name. Once downloaded, these apps were used by people to spy on their life partner’s smartphone. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch on Monday that we don’t allow ads that promote spyware for partner surveillance.
“We immediately removed any ad that violates our policy and will continue to track such apps to prevent them from trying to evade our detection systems,” the spokesperson said.
The report found that several stalkerware apps have used a variety of technologies to successfully evade Google’s ban on such apps.
Google updated the Play Store policy
In October last year, Google updated its Play Store policy to ban stalkerware apps. Google said that apps that transfer personal information from devices to devices without sufficient knowledge or consent and do not consistently show notifications will be banned from the Play Store.
Security writer Graham Cluley said in a blog, “This is spyware used by jailed ex-partners and such people have no hesitation about attacking someone’s privacy, they just track this. They are busy doing what their partners are doing and with whom they are.”
However, Google has allowed apps that parents can use to track their children.
Around 4,627 mobile users in India are victims of stalkerware
A recent report by cyber security firm Kaspersky claims that some people try to digitally control the lives of their intimate partners. Around 4,627 mobile users were found to be victims of stalkerware in India. In 2020, a total of 53,870 mobile users were affected by stalkware globally. In 2019, Kaspersky found 67,500 affected mobile users.
