Apple hasn’t developed an easy way to restore deleted text messages on your iPhone yet, although you can use an iCloud backup.
There are a few ways to restore deleted text messages on iPhone. We all get many text messages on a daily basis which are not necessary. For this, most of us select multiple messages on our iPhone and delete them in one shot. Along with removing junk and spam, this process sometimes also deletes important messages. There are also occasions where you accidentally delete an important text message and look for an easier way to get it back on your iPhone.
Apple has enabled the iPhone with iCloud integration to store backups of content, including text messages. But to receive texts from iCloud backup, it is important to know some things. There is also no standalone option offered by the iPhone maker to restore deleted messages in one go.
How to Restore Text Messages Using iCloud Backup
You can follow the steps given below to restore deleted text messages on your iPhone using iCloud backup. Before starting the process, it’s important to mention that you need to enable Messages as a part of your iCloud backup in order to restore your previous text messages from the cloud.
- Go to Settings and then tap on your Apple ID profile at the top.
- Open iCloud > Manage Storage > Backup and then select the backup that was taken before the date you deleted your text messages that you want to restore.
- Scroll down to find Message Backup and make sure it is shown with some data.
- Now, you need to reset your iPhone. This store will remove all content and data. Therefore, you
- Proceed only if you have those available in the backup file containing your deleted messages.
- If you’re sure, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
Your iPhone will now reboot and it will take some time to come back. Then it will ask if you want to recover from backup. From there choose the right backup. If you don’t want to delete all your content and data from your iPhone but want to restore the messages stored on iCloud, you can restore them by logging into iCloud.com. The steps on how you can do this are given below.
How to Restore Text Messages on iPhone Using iCloud.com
Log in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID and password. Go to Text Messages and search for the ones you want to restore. The text message option will only appear if you have enabled backup for your texts.
Now, you have to turn off message backup by going to Settings and then your Apple ID profile and then going to iCloud Settings. You will see a list of content that is being backed up to iCloud. To turn off text message backup, tap Messages. Now you will be asked to download your text messages locally on your iPhone. Select Disable and download messages from the pop-up message. This will download all existing messages – including those you have deleted from your phone.
This option only works if your iPhone hasn’t been backed up to iCloud recently. Otherwise, you won’t be able to receive deleted messages because they will no longer be available on iCloud.com and will be replaced by new messages you’ve received on your iPhone.
For users who do not use iCloud, Apple allows backups via iTunes or the Finder. In this case you have to physically connect your iPhone. Similar to the iCloud backup method – Deletes existing content and data so that you can restore the old backup.
