In view of Cyclone Gulab intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on Saturday that it will continue to cover Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as a precautionary measure. Deploying a total of 18 teams. Giving further details, NDRF said that it will deploy 13 teams in Odisha and 5 teams in Andhra Pradesh.
On the other hand, West Bengal government on Saturday canceled the leave of all government employees till October 5 due to the upcoming cyclone Gulab.
“In view of the warning of heavy rain due to deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, leave of all state government employees till October 5 is canceled with immediate effect,” the West Bengal government said in an order.
In fact, the Indian Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a cyclonic storm warning for Odisha and Andhra Pradesh after the formation of a deep pressure area in the northeast and adjoining east-central region of the Bay of Bengal. The Deep Pressure Area formed 510 km east-southeast of Gopalpur and 590 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday morning.
“It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours. It is very likely to move towards north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur around Kalingapatnam by the evening of 26 September,” the IMD said.
Meteorologists said that under its influence, light to moderate rain is expected at most places and heavy rains at some places over Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. On Sunday also, light to moderate rain at most places and heavy to very heavy rain at some places is likely over South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The northern hinterlands of Odisha, Telangana and Chhattisgarh may also receive heavy rains on Sunday. Similarly, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at most places and heavy at few places over Odisha and Telangana for September 27. Also, there is a possibility of heavy rain at some places over Coastal West Bengal.
It has also predicted strong wind speed reaching 70 kmph in the northwest and west-central region of the Bay of Bengal.
High waves will occur in the sea during the next three days and fishermen in Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have been asked not to venture into the sea over east-central and northeastern Bay of Bengal from September 25 to 27.
The IMD has also predicted water-logging in low-lying areas due to inundation of roads due to torrential rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh on September 26 and Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the next two days. Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner has asked all the District Collectors to remain alert in view of the weather forecast.
