Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday announced that he would strongly oppose the appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Describing Sidhu as a “dangerous man”, the Captain said, “Will make any sacrifice to save the country from such a man.” Simultaneously, Singh also revealed that he had offered to resign as the Chief Minister of Punjab three weeks ago, but was asked by Sonia Gandhi to continue.
Capt Amarinder Singh reiterated his intention to oppose any move to make Sidhu the CM face of the state, saying he would put up a strong candidate against the PPCC president to defeat him in the 2022 assembly elections. Even before now, the former chief minister said several times in the media, “He (Sidhu) is dangerous for the state.”
“Offered resignation three weeks ago”
Stating that he would only leave politics at a higher level, the former chief minister said, “I was ready to go after victory, but never after defeat. He revealed that he had tendered his resignation to Sonia Gandhi three weeks ago. was offered, but they asked him to continue in the post.
Amarinder Singh said, “If she had called me and asked me to resign, I would have quit just then. As a soldier, I know how to do my job.”
He said that he had even told Sonia Gandhi that he was ready to resign and let someone else take over as the chief minister after the Congress won another sweeping victory in Punjab.
“But that didn’t happen, so I’ll fight,” he insisted, humiliating him by making him believe, secretly calling the CLP.
“Gandhi brothers and sisters are still very inexperienced”
He added, “I don’t take MLAs on flights to Goa or any other place. I don’t do such things. I don’t do gimmicks, and Gandhi brothers and sisters know this is not my way at all.”
The captain continued, “Priyanka and Rahul are like my children… It should not have ended like this. I am hurt.” He also said that the Gandhi brothers and sisters are still very inexperienced and their advisors are clearly misleading them.
Indicating that he is still keeping his political options open, the former chief minister said he is talking to his friends before deciding on his future. He also quipped, “You can be old at 40 and young at 80.”
