ITR FILING: The Income Tax Department has said that it will refund the excess interest and late fees charged to taxpayers due to software glitches. This rule will be applicable to the income tax returns to be filed for the financial year 2020-21. The last date for filing tax returns for this financial year has been extended from July 31, 2021 to September 30, 2021. In fact, the Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns due to COVID-19. Some taxpayers said that they had to pay late fees for filing income tax returns after July 31.
Complaint of error in interest calculation
Actually, due to a glitch in the ITR software of the Income Tax Department, the interest calculation was going wrong. The department says that now this error has been fixed. If interest is charged more than anyone or late fee is imposed then it will be refunded. The department has said that taxpayers have been asked to use its new version for filing tax returns. If someone has already filed the return and he has to pay wrong interest or late fee then it will be returned after processing the return.

Infosys got the contract to develop the site
In fact, this time the tax filing website of the Income Tax Department was facing problems from the beginning. Earlier this week also users complained of technical flaws. They said that they are not able to see the returns of the previous years as well as the calculation of interest is also not getting correct. Users say that many features are also not available on the new website. The responsibility of preparing the site was given to Infosys. The co-founder of the company said about these complaints that they are being rectified.
Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also raised the issue of glitches in the new software for filing returns. He also spoke to Infosys officials in this regard. Infosys was given a contract two years ago to develop a new income tax filing system and build a new site.
