Telecom operators have acquired spectrum in many bands to launch in 5G service. Airtel is currently working with Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Realme and Apple to test its 5G test network.
Telecom operators have acquired spectrum in multiple bands to launch in 5G service
According to an online report, Airtel has written to the Department of Telecom (DoT) to frame guidelines that new 5G devices launched or sold in India should support all existing bands for 5G in the country. Airtel has mentioned in its letter that 50 percent of smartphone users in India change or upgrade their handsets after two years of usage, and further delays in building a supportive device ecosystem will hamper India’s 5G leadership ambition.
As of now, 5G devices being launched by developers operate only in the 350 Giga Hz spectrum, while 5G services can be provided using multiple existing bands and new radio interfaces. Airtel said, “If minimum features are fixed for servicing 5G service, then provision of 5G service in such existing multiple spectrum bands can be done only with the availability of handset.” Airtel is currently working with Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Realme and Apple to test its 5G test network.
The Financial Express reported that Airtel also noted that the new 5G devices should support dynamic spectrum sharing, while dual SIM handsets should have 2G, 4G and 5G support.
Permission is granted by DoT by Priorities and Technology Partners as identified by TSP itself. Experimental spectrum is being offered in various bands including mid-band (3.2 GHz to 3.67 GHz), millimeter-wave band (24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz) and sub-GHz band (700 GHz). TSPs will also be allowed to use their existing spectrum (800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2500 MHz) for conducting 5G trials.
Telecom operators have acquired spectrum in multiple bands keeping in mind the future use of these bands for launching in 5G service. For example, 2100 MHz was initially used by operators to provide 3G service and is now being used to offer 4G LTE and has been adopted for 5G in different parts of the world. is.
Airtel becomes first company to successfully test 5G
Earlier this year in January, Airtel became the first telecom company to successfully deploy 5G service on a commercial network in the 1800 MHz band in Hyderabad city through NSA (non-stand alone) network technology. The Telecom Department has allotted spectrum to Airtel in four Indian telecom circles including Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Delhi. Airtel has been allotted 5G trial spectrum in 3500 MHz, 28 GHz and 700 MHz. Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have been allotted spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. Applicant TSPs include Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and MTNL.
