Five Indian sailors have gone stranded in Iran and have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help. These people have appealed to PM Modi to help them bring them back to India and take action against the agents duping them in the name of giving employment abroad. The Indian World Forum gave this information on Monday.
In a statement, Forum President Puneet Singh said, “I have received an aid-related and distressing message from five Indian seafarers stranded for almost two years in Chabahar, Sistan and Balochistan Province, Iran. Among the stranded Indian nationals are two persons from Maharashtra, whose names are Aniket Sham Yenpure (29) and Mandar Milind Varlikar (26). At the same time, Naveen Singh (26) of Uttarakhand, Pranav Kumar (22) of Bihar and Thamijselvan Rengasamy (30) of Tamil Nadu are also stranded in Iran.
The five citizens were in jail for 400 days
In a video message, the sailors said they were arrested from the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian authorities on 21 February 2020 for allegedly smuggling drugs. One of these people said in the video message, We have been in jail for about 400 days for cheating. Despite being released on March 9, the Iranian authorities have not given us our passports and documents. We are facing troubles. He further said, we have a very bad situation here. These agents duped us and sent us here. We request the Government of India to take action against them so that no one else has to suffer what we are facing here.
Waiting for help since release
These people further said that the ship’s captain has repeatedly testified before the courts and investigators that he was the mastermind of the drug smuggling conspiracy and that the five Indian sailors had no role in it. The sailors and their families have repeatedly requested the concerned authorities for help. However, their requests have not been examined and have not been considered in detail. On 8 March 2021, the local court in Chabahar found him innocent and ordered his immediate release. Since then, these sailors are waiting for help.
