Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday indicated that he may hold talks with insurgents in Balochistan. This idea by Imran has come at a time when voices are being raised in support of India in Balochistan. At the same time, China has invested a lot in this area and is constantly warning Pakistan to establish peace in Balochistan. Imran accused the previous governments of not dealing with extremism properly and said that they did not do development works in the region properly.
Balochistan province has been facing a long-standing separatist insurgency. Activists in Balochistan say thousands of activists have gone missing in recent years and the Pakistani military is brutally suppressing the region’s aspirations for autonomy. According to the Dawn newspaper report, while addressing local leaders, students and businessmen during his visit to Gwadar, Imran said that he is planning to talk to the insurgents in Balochistan. He said that unrest in Balochistan is linked to poverty and backwardness and no government would have ever needed to worry about extremism if attention was given to its development.
Blame the previous governments for the unrest in the province
Imran said that we have given the biggest package to Balochistan because we believe that justice has not really been done to the people of Balochistan and people have lagged behind. Taking a jibe at the previous governments, Imran said, the money which was earlier to be used for the development of Balochistan. That money was used by the politicians on themselves. He said, the feeling of being deprived started spreading among the people in Balochistan. This sentiment would never have spread in the province, if only the leaders of Balochistan had used the money in the right way. This is the reason why they (rebels) should have complaints about it.
Why is Imran Khan ready to talk to the rebels?
China has invested billions of dollars in Balochistan. In fact, Gwadar is a major destination for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). China has invested $ 62 billion on this entire project. But the project is likely to be delayed due to the unrest in the province. In such a situation, China is constantly asking Pakistan to make peace in the region. On the other hand, voices in support of India continue to come from Balochistan. The people here have been calling for help from India to escape the oppression of the Pakistani army. This is the reason why Imran is sleeping. That’s why he now wants to talk to the rebels.
