Dogs attacked in Pakistan (signal picture)
A Karachi court on Saturday ordered the police to arrest the owner of two pet dogs who attacked a lawyer five days ago. Additional District and Sessions Judge South issued the directions after rejecting the pre-arrest bail appeal of owner Humayun Khan. It is alleged that two dogs of Humayun Khan attacked veteran lawyer Mirza Ali Akhtar on Monday, injuring him seriously.
The court said that due to the negligence of the owner, the dogs attacked the lawyer, whose life is now in danger. Meanwhile, the police swung into action after the court’s order. The police wrote a letter to the Federal Investigation Agency requesting them to include the owner and his son’s name in the Exit Control List (ECL) so that they cannot leave the country. This letter has been sent by SSP Investigation South Mirza Muhammad Imran.
‘Do you have a dog license?’
A day earlier, lawyers from Karachi Bar Association were present in large numbers to show solidarity with the injured lawyer in the court proceedings. The court asked the police whether the dogs were taken into custody, to which the police replied in the affirmative. Humayun Khan appeared in the court in a wheelchair.
The court asked his lawyer whether he had a license to keep dogs. The lawyer argued before the court that the injured lawyer had got up on his own and left the scene without any help, as can be seen in the video. He further said that the owner cooperated with the law instead of trying to evade the law.
‘It is not a crime to own a dog’
The lawyer said, ‘It is not a crime to own a dog.’ They are looked after by two caretakers. According to the police report, it was the owners’ son Daniyal who was present with the dogs and later went with them. The police has also named him in the whole case.
The CCTV footage of the incident shows that Advocate Mirza Ali Akhtar was walking in the neighborhood of Phase 6 Defense Housing Authority when two dogs attacked him and threw him to the ground. Another man, who seemed to be a caregiver of the dogs, tried hard to separate the animals from Ali, but to no avail.
Incident captured in CCTV footage
The caretaker ran to find the other man and then both of them rescued the lawyer from the dogs. It is seen in the footage that both the caretakers left the injured lawyer on the road and took the dogs. The police registered a case against the dog’s owner Humayun Khan and also named two caretakers in the case.
