New positive cases in Tamil Nadu have come down from 30,000 in a day to around 8,000 in May this year.
Car Manufacturing Plant
Car manufacturers present in Tamil Nadu have got the green signal to work at their full capacity. The state, which is known as the Indian automobile industry hub, was one of the worst-hit states due to the pandemic. It has allowed industrial activity to resume operations at 100% capacity with export commitments. Auto manufacturers, being one of the key stakeholders in the state’s manufacturing sector, have also got the green signal to resume 100% capacity utilization.
With this, car brands like Renault-Nissan, Hyundai and Ford are free to work to their full potential despite protests from activists regarding safety during the pandemic. A senior state government official told Reuters that any company that exports or supplies to export industries will be allowed to operate at full capacity as the state has reduced Covid-19 positive cases.
workers are protesting
New positive cases in Tamil Nadu have come down from 30,000 in a day to around 8,000 in May this year. However, Tamil Nadu still accounts for a seventh of all cases in the country. Renault-Nissan employees moved the Madras High Court last month and appealed for a halt to operations to protect workers during the pandemic.
Workers’ unions have written a protest letter to carmakers, arguing that hundreds of workers in Chennai have fallen ill with COVID-19 and many have died. Due to workers’ agitation and strike, Renault-Nissan was forced to cease operations in the state. Ford and Hyundai also halted work at their manufacturing facilities in May. Responding to that appeal, the Madras High Court in June 2021 tasked industry safety officials to visit carmaker plants in the state to develop uniform safety guidelines for the sector.
