Covid-19 Vaccine India Update: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday clarified that Bharat Biotech’s Covaccine does not contain the serum of a newly born calf. He said that while the serum is used in the process of making the vaccine, it is not present in the final product. The ministry said in a statement that certain social media posts have distorted and misrepresented facts. In these, it has been indicated that the indigenous covaccine contains the serum of the newly born calf.
It further states that the serum of the newly born calf is used only for the preparation and growth of vir cells. Serum is the standard ingredient used around the world for the growth of vir cells.
No serum in final product
The Health Ministry said that this technology has been used for decades to develop vaccines against polio, rabies and flu. He told that the Viro cells are washed several times with water and chemicals, so that the serum does not remain in them. The viro cells are then infected with the corona virus for viral growth.
The ministry said in the statement that in the process of viral growth, the virus cells are completely destroyed. Therefore the developed virus also gets inactivated and purified. Then the infected virus is used to make the vaccine. Calf serum is not used to make the final vaccine.
According to the statement, therefore, the calf serum is completely absent in Covaccine and the calf serum is not a component of the final vaccine product.
This clarification has come because Congress leader Gaurav Pandhi had tweeted that the government has accepted that calf serum is present in the vaccine.
