Boston-based pharmaceutical company Moderna has announced a new supply agreement overnight with Australia for 2.5 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine. In this agreement, one crore doses are against the original form of Corona Virus, which is to be supplied this year.
There are many questions about how the vaccine is being used extensively in countries such as Canada, the US and the UK, but how the vaccine works, how safe it is and whether the corona virus is effective on altered forms. Many countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) have approved its use under emergency use.
Moderna’s deal with Australia also includes 1.5 million doses of its potential booster potential vaccine that could be made available by 2022. The deal is subject to the approval of Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia’s drug regulator – for both basic vaccines and boosters. Moderna is likely to submit an application to TGA in this regard soon.
How does Moderna vaccine work?
Moderna’s vaccine against the original type is given in two doses. Both vaccines and its updated booster vaccine are mRNA vaccines (as is Pfizer’s vaccine). This vaccine contains genetic instructions to make our cells the ‘spike protein’ of the corona virus. The mRNA is wrapped in an oily shell that prevents it from degrading immediately in the body and ensures that it reaches the cells after inoculation.
Once the mRNA reaches the cell, it turns into a spike protein, which our immune system recognizes. Our immune system develops immunity against spike proteins and learns how to fight against it if the corona virus enters our body sometime in the future. Moderna vaccine can remain stable for six months at temperatures below zero to 20 degrees Celsius. It can be stored in the refrigerator at 4 ° C for 30 days.
Most pharmaceutical logistics companies are capable of storing and transporting products at temperatures below zero to 20 ° C, so storage and distribution of this vaccine is comparatively easy. At the same time, Pfizer’s mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine requires long-term storage at temperatures below minus 60 degrees Celsius. However, unopened vials can be kept at freezer temperature for up to two weeks.
Is this vaccine safe and effective?
Talking about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, in the Phase III clinical trial of the vaccine, it was found to be 91 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 as well as providing complete protection against many serious forms of the disease. Researchers did not see any safety concerns and common side effects were transient pain at the site of injection and headache or fatigue for three days.
Clinical trials, however, precede the worrisome variants of SARS-COV-2. In order to provide protection against various types of viruses, later studies found that these types are escaping from the vaccine of Moderna. Initial studies were found to be slightly less effective against the B.1.351 type of virus.
Is it effective on different variants?
In response to these data, Moderna updated its mRNA vaccine formula due to a change in the spike protein present in type B1.351. In March this year, it began a Phase I and Phase II clinical trial to test the safety and potency of variant vaccines in evoking an immune response.
In early studies, it has been shown to be effective in making antibodies against type B1.351. It is possible that Moderna will be able to update its vaccines to provide protection against future forms of the corona virus, allowing us to provide faster protection to people from emerging forms.
