Griffits said that the attack in the Marib (Yemen War) may seem to win the war through military intervention, but it would trigger a vicious cycle of violence and unrest.
Symbolic picture
UN on Yemen Issue: The United Nations Security Council has called for a cease-fire in Yemen, saying that sustainable ceasefire and political dialogue will only end the six-year-old war in this Arab world’s poorest country (Yemen War Crisis). Calling to end the atmosphere of unrest and instability, the Security Council on Wednesday indicated that Iran-backed Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen’s oil-rich Marib province are taking action.
About 1 million people have been displaced from 2015 due to the attacks. Prior to the release of the Council’s statement, UN Special Envoy Martin Griffits addressed the press conference (Yemen War Current Status). He said that due to the attack of Houthi rebels for more than a year, many precious lives, including children, have been lost. He said that the displaced people in Marib province are living in the shadow of fear and continuous attacks are hampering peace efforts.
Thousands of people went to safe places
Griffits said that the attack in Marib might make it seem like it could win the war through military intervention, but it would trigger a vicious cycle of violence and unrest (Yemen War How Long). He said that with the overall participation of different political powers and constituents, Yemen can be effectively ruled. The head of the United Nations Humanitarian Service, Mark Lovkuk, told the Security Council that more than 25,000 people had to go to safe places due to the war in Marib.
Millions more people may be displaced
At the same time, if the fight does not stop, 385,000 people may be displaced in the coming month. Earlier in India, Yemen also said that due to the increasing violence here, terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda and Islamic State will get opportunities to spread (Yemen War History). India had expressed concern over the situation in the country and said that civil and energy installations are being targeted in the attacks. Due to which a large number of catastrophes have taken place and people have fled.
