Whenever there is mention of any cruel dictator in the world, the first picture of Adolf Hitler is in front of the eyes. But there was another dictator like Hitler, whose stories of cruelty are still a matter of discussion today. Actually, we are talking about the dictator of Italy Benito Mussolini. It is worth noting here that both Mussolini and Hitler were friends. Mussolini ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 and during this time people who raised their voice against him were massacred.
On this day i.e. 28 April 1945, Mussolini was killed by the people. The people were so angry with him that he hung Mussolini’s body and threw stones at him. The story of Mussolini’s life is no less than a film. He started his career as a teacher, then became a laborer and then a soldier. At the same time, he left the job of a soldier and became a journalist and after that reached the top of Italy’s power. After coming to power in Italy, he came to the world as an autocratic dictator.
The National Fascist Party of Italy was formed in 1921
Benito Mussolini was born on 29 July 1883 in the city of Dovia di Predepio, Italy. Mussolini was a smart and inquisitive student since childhood. He started his career as a teacher, but he felt that this career is not for him. Mussolini studied philosophers such as Emmanuel Kant and Karl Marx. At the age of 20, he became a journalist and started spreading radical political ideas through his newspaper. He advocated violence to bring justice to the workers and trade unions.
Seeing these antics of Mussolini, he was arrested many times. His views were so fanatical that the Socialist Party evicted him from the party. After this Mussolini served as a sharpshooter during the First World War. Mussolini formed the National Fascist Party of Italy in 1921. By now, Mussolini had gained a hold among the people through his newspapers. He had a large number of supporters. Mussolini also had a paramilitary force with a black veneer.
How did Mussolini reach the top of power?
Benito Mussolini created a fierce furore in Italy on the strength of this paramilitary force. Government offices were burnt and opposition leaders were put to death. About 30 thousand fascist soldiers arrived in Rome, the capital of Italy, to revolt. Seeing this, there was panic among the Italian leaders. On 29 October 1922, King Victor Emanuel III appointed Mussolini as Prime Minister of Italy. He was the youngest person to reach this position.
In the 1920s Mussolini worked to improve his image in Italy. By 1930, Mussolini’s intention was to spread his power outside Italy. In 1935, his army infiltrated Ethiopia. There was a long battle and Italy won it. Ethiopia was made a colony of Italy. On the other hand, when World War II started, Mussolini wanted to show the world the strength of his strength.
What was Mussolini’s role in World War II?
When Hitler marched on France, Mussolini was watching this happen from the sideline. Germany had a well-equipped army and a leadership. At the same time, Mussolini had nothing of the sort, so he befriended Hitler. Mussolini declared war with all the enemies of Germany. But he had no one to help but Germany. Mussolini was aware that the Italian army was not equipped. On the other hand, Mussolini also needed a powerful army to run his dictatorship.
In 1941, there was an attempt to oust Mussolini from power, but Hitler’s army intervened and prevented this from happening. During World War II, Mussolini followed Germany and fought many wars with him. He attacked in many countries. Greece was one of them, but this campaign was unsuccessful. Because of Mussolini’s dictatorship, people were falling prey to starvation in Italy and people were angry with him.
How did Mussolini end?
The war in Europe ended in the spring of 1945 and Italy began to disintegrate. Italy was severely devastated by the war. People now had anger towards Mussolini. An attempt was made to arrest Mussolini, but this was not an easy task. Seeing the anger of the people, Mussolini met representatives of anti-fascist people in Milan on 25 April 1945. On the other hand, he came to know that Germany is in talks about his surrender.
Knowing this, Mussolini, along with his mistress Clara Pettica, started fleeing towards Switzerland with a German squad. Mussolini felt that he would spend the last moments of his life in exile. But he was caught on the way. After this, anti-fascist people locked Mussolini and Pettica in a farmhouse. The next day, on 28 April Mussolini and his mistress were shot and killed. His body was hung and showered with stones on it.
