AirDrop is a popular feature that allows Apple devices to safely and easily transfer files, photos, and wirelessly between them. Users can share items with their own device, friends, family, or even strangers. This feature is easy to use, however, a new security bug has failed every feature of it.
Researcher at TU Darmstadt (Technical University Darmstadt, Germany) has detected that there is a bug in the airdrop, and it can leak all personal data of the user who is using it. The airdrop includes three modes, Receiving Off, Contacts Only, and Everyone. The default setting is Contacts Only, which means that the people in your address book can access photos, files and more for your device.
According to the security researcher, “Apple AirDrops shares more than files.” Currently, AirDrop is used by Apple’s 1.5 billion or 150 crore users and according to the researcher, almost all of them are vulnerable to cyber-attacks through AirDrop. Security researcher has also claimed that Apple has not yet “stopped” this privacy hack, as a whole the data of these users is in danger.
How can you avoid it
This means that more than 1.5 billion Apple device users are still vulnerable to privacy attacks. Researcher said that only users can protect themselves by disabling airdrop search in system settings and avoiding opening share menu.
As an attacker, it is also possible to know the phone number and email address of airdrop users as strangers. They require a Wi-Fi-enabled device and physical proximity to target someone, which starts the search by opening the Share tab on an iOS or macOS device.
