A US court has convicted former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of black American George Floyd. 46-year-old Floyd died during his arrest in May last year, when the police force treated him brutally. An employee of a store in Minneapolis accused Floyd of giving a counterfeit note.
After this, policeman Derek Chauvin, who arrived on the spot, had put Floyd’s neck on his knee for more than nine minutes and put him on the ground. During this time he kept saying repeatedly that he is having trouble breathing. Eventually Floyd succumbed. 25 May: A Minneapolis shopkeeper called the police, accusing Floyd of giving a $ 20 counterfeit note. Derek Chauvin arrived with the police and dropped Floyd on the ground with handcuffs. Chauvin then placed his knees on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes 26 seconds. During this time, Floyd kept saying repeatedly that he was not breathing. Seeing this, some people opposed Chauvin. Floyd was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
May 26: Police issued a statement saying that Floyd’s death was due to a ‘medical problem’. A few minutes later, a video of police brutality was posted. The police then issued a statement saying that the FBI would investigate the matter and three other policemen, including Chauvin, have been fired. After this, protests against apartheid started across the country.
27 May: Mayor Jacob Frey pleaded to criminal charges against Chauvin. The first protests began in Minneapolis. The looting started here and the incident of arson came out. On seeing this, these demonstrations spread to other cities of the country.
May 28: Governor Till Walge hired the Minnesota National Guard to control the situation. At the same time, the police left the precinct station and the angry protesters set it on fire.
May 29: Chauvin was arrested and charged with murder. During this time, the then President Donald Trump tweeted people demonstrating in Minneapolis as thugs. He warned that if the looting starts, firing will also start.
May 30: Donald Trump overturned his tweet statement. But by then violent demonstrations had begun in Minneapolis and across the country.
May 31: Governor Walge said Attorney General Keith Ellison would lead the action in Floyd’s murder case.
1 June: The county medical examiner said that Floyd’s heart may have stopped because of police action and pressing the neck with his knee. Floyd must have died due to this.
2 June: Minnesota’s Department of Human Rights begins a civil rights investigation against the Minneapolis Police Department.
3 June: Alison Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder and the other three officers involved in Floyd’s arrest were also charged.
June 4: Floyd’s funeral was held in Minneapolis.
June 5: Minneapolis banned the rule of holding the neck from behind by the police. Many such restrictions were implemented in the coming months.
June 6: Peaceful demonstrations took place across the country and police reforms were demanded.

October 7: Chauvin was released from prison by paying a million dollar bond. After this there were tremendous performances.
5 November: Judge Peter Cahill rejected the request of the accused police officers to transfer the trial.
January 12: Because of the court’s ability, Cahill said that Chauvin would be prosecuted alone. Other officers will be tried in August.
