Raul Castro, former Cuba president and brother of Fidel Castro, has announced that he is resigning from the post of head of the country’s Communist Party. This will be the first time since the revolution in 1959 and for the first time in the last nearly six decades, when no member of the Castro family will lead the affairs of the country. Raul Castro (89), in his speech at the beginning of the eighth Congress of the ruling party, announced his resignation on Friday.
Raul said, I am fulfilling my work as the first secretary… with satisfaction (of discharging my duty) and with confidence in the future of the country. Castro did not say who he would support to make him the successor to the post of the first secretary of the Communist Party. But he has previously indicated that he supports the 60-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel, who became president after him in 2018. It is believed that Miguel believes in opening the Miguel economy without doing anything to a Cuban party system.
Cuba is going through a crisis
Raul Castro’s retirement means that this will be the first time in the last six decades that no member of the Castro family will formally lead the affairs of Cubans. This change is taking place in the country at a time when it is already passing through difficult times. The country’s economy is in crisis due to the Corona virus global epidemic and restrictions imposed by former US President Donald Trump. There are long lines for food and the food crisis has increased the trouble of the people here.
The sluggish pace of opening the economy increased people’s problems
The anger of the people against the government for increasing inequality in the country is increasing. The biggest debate point within Cuba is the pace of reforms. Many people complain that the so-called historical generation represented by Castro has been very sluggish in opening up the economy. The Communist Party is made up of 700,000 activists and is tasked with directing the affairs of the nation and society in the Cuban constitution.
Fidel Castro died in 2016
In 1959, the struggle led by Fidel Castro ousted the country’s dictator Fulgencio Batista from power. He then became the head of the Communist Party in 1965 and implemented socialism in Cuba. He quickly took the old party under his control and was the undisputed leader of the country until he became ill in 2006. After this, in 2008, he handed over the presidency to his younger brother Raul Castro. Raul also clashed with Fidel in 1959. Raul Castro became the head of the Communist Party in 2011. At the same time, Fidel Castro died in 2016.
