Challenges of holding elections amid rising cases of COVID-19
Panchayat elections are nothing short of a challenge for the Election Commission and the administration in the midst of the growing outbreak of the Corona epidemic. The Election Commission is insisting on taking all such measures at polling stations, so that infection can be prevented from spreading. Enrollment in large numbers is also a big challenge for the Commission. Returning officers have received around 3.40 lakh nominations for 2.21 lakh posts in 20 districts. It is estimated that in all four phases elections, for the 8.69 lakh posts, a total of 17 lakh candidates can fill the nomination.
Former Miss India contestant is also in the fray
This time, many interesting candidates are also in the fray for the panchayat elections. These include former Miss India contestant and Model Deeksha Singh, who is contesting the election of District Panchayat from ward number 26 of Jaunpur. Shrikala Singh, wife of Dhananjay Singh, accused of murder and BJP member, is also a candidate from ward number 45 of Jaunpur itself. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s niece Sandhya Yadav is contesting the district panchayat elections from Mainpuri. Interestingly, he has the support of the BJP here. BJP had nominated Sangita Sengar, wife of rape convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar from ward number 22 of Unnao, but has now withdrawn her name.
The mood of the public will be seen before the 2022 assembly elections in UP
Politically too, the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are being considered very important, because there is less than a year left for the assembly elections in the state. In such a situation, the results of the Panchayat elections are considered to be indicative of the mood of the people of UP before the 2022 assembly elections.
