The pharmaceutical company Pfizer has decided to withdraw the application for emergency use of its COVID-19 Vaccine in India. Pfizer was the first company to ask the drug regulator General of India (DCGI) to allow emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine in the country. The company took this decision after such approval in the UK and the UK.
Pfizer’s spokesperson said in a statement, “In order to demand emergency use of his COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer attended a meeting of the Subject Expert Committee of the Drug Regulatory Authority on 3 February. After deliberating in the meeting and gathering additional information, the company has decided to withdraw its application at this time.
Pfizer will continue the conversation
The company says that Pfizer will continue to negotiate with the concerned authority and the approval request will be reissued to provide the vaccine in the future. Pfizer will take further steps to provide its vaccine for use on behalf of the government in India and in conjunction with the regulator for emergency use.
According to sources, Pfizer sought permission from the drug regulator to import, sell and distribute the vaccine to India in December 2020, in addition to the exemption of clinical trials on the Indian population under special provisions under the New Drugs and Clinical Trial Rules.
