A person who was arrested exterior Buckingham Palace earlier this week has now been detained below the Mental Health Act, police say.
The 59-year-old was initially held on suspicion of possessing a knife and ammunition and was taken into custody on Tuesday night, as a managed explosion was carried out by officers exterior the royal residence in central London.
Police mentioned they have been known as at round 7pm after he approached the gates of the palace and allegedly threw quite a lot of objects, believed to be shotgun cartridges, into the grounds.
Officers detained the person who was allegedly discovered with a knife and was not in possession of a firearm, mentioned the Metropolitan Police in an announcement.
On Wednesday, he was held below the Mental Health Act and brought to hospital. He will stay on bail whereas receiving medical care.
Speaking at a media briefing forward of the King’s coronation on Saturday, Metropolitan Police deputy assistant commissioner Ade Adelekan mentioned the person had initially requested officers if he might converse to a soldier.
When the officers mentioned that was not attainable, the person allegedly began throwing the ammunition, Mr Adelekan mentioned.
He was searched and was allegedly discovered to be in possession of a lock knife.
He was then arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife and ammunition.
During the arrest, the person instructed officers they need to deal with his rucksack with care, which led to a managed explosion being carried out on the bag.
The police assertion mentioned: “Cordons were in place after the incident after the man was also found to be in possession of a bag.
“Specialists attended and a managed explosion was carried out as a precaution.”
There were no reported injuries and the incident was not being treated as terror related, the force added.
