Top Republicans are ripping the FBI’s unprecedented raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property, promising they may examine the Department of Justice “when” they take again the House in November.
Meanwhile, Democrats following the feds’ search of Trump’s property are reminding detractors that the FBI director was appointed by Trump and are reiterating that “no person is above the law.”
“I’ve seen enough,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy stated in a tweet. “The Department of Justice has reached an insupportable state of weaponized politicization.
“When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned,” McCarthy added. “Attorney General (Merrick) Garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar.”
FBI brokers on Monday raided Trump’s Florida property as a part of a federal investigation into whether or not he took categorised information from the White House. The feds’ search has sparked harsh criticism from main GOP members.
Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence, who might be a rival for Trump in 2024, stated the FBI’s raid “undermines public confidence in our system of justice.”
“I share the deep concern of millions of Americans over the unprecedented search of the personal residence of President Trump,” Pence tweeted, later including, “After years the place FBI brokers have been discovered to be appearing on political motivation throughout our administration, the looks of continued partisanship by the Justice Department should be addressed.
“Yesterday’s action undermines public confidence in our system of justice and Attorney General Garland must give a full accounting to the American people as to why this action was taken and he must do so immediately,” the previous VP added.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in contrast the raid to “rogue behavior of communist countries.”
“These are the type of things that happen in countries during civil war. The political persecution MUST STOP!!!” Greene tweeted, later including, “DEFUND THE FBI!”
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz known as the FBI’s search “corrupt and an abuse of power.”
“Congress must demand answers,” Cruz tweeted. “We need hearings; we need subpoenas. Dems in charge will refuse, but the American people deserve to know why Biden is using the FBI as his political enforcers. Tin-pot dictators do that, but that’s not how America works.”
Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton responded to the GOP criticism of the DOJ, together with of McCarthy promising that Republicans would launch an investigation.
“Authoritarianism is when you believe the FBI needs to be punished for investigating a president instead of the president being punished for breaking federal laws,” Moulton tweeted.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the “Today” present emphasised that “no person is above the law. Not even the president of the United States. Not even a former president of the United States.”
